On neutrality and fascism

Jason Stanley has spent the past decade studying fascism, from Mussolini to Duterte. In this video op-ed, he argues that yes, we should be worried: If Americans are not vigilant, fascism could become a new reality in the United States.

Three Essential Features of Fascism:

  • Invoking a Mythic Past
  • Sowing Division
  • Attacking Truth

Seven lessons from the 2016-2020 MAGA Civil War

  1. No one is above the law.
  1. There is no double standard in asserting that truths are right and lies are wrong.
  1. Racial supremacy is a lie.
  1. The free press is not the enemy of the people, but the custodian of freedom.
  1. Free speech does not imply the right to lie.
  1. In the absence of absolute certainty, the best approximation rules.
